about a preening pariah kite - did it take a short nap while preening?

14 April 2015, Pune - Photographs by Bharat Bhushan

There was this pariah or black kite, Milvus migrans, perched high up on a neem tree, Azadirachta indica, along the river at Bund Garden, on a late morning, surprisingly cloudy. It had found a good perch that seemed to be a favorite one, judging by the smooth appearance of the branch. Watched it for more than 90 minutes, while I was having a slow brunch with friends at the Royal Connaught Boat Club. It was at peace, on its perch and did not seem to have to fly away to forage or sally. For about five minutes or so, around 10.00 am, it began to preen, nestled its head within its chest feathers, and stayed put for nearly five more minutes. After a while, the kite began preening again. We left at about 10.30 am, and the kite continued to stay still at its perch. The question is - Did this pariah kite take a short nap while preening?
